LITERACY LEARNING NEEDS ASSESSMENT

What is a Literacy Learning Needs Assessment?

A Literacy Learning Needs Assessment can be carried out with students from the age of 6 and above. It involves a range of activities looking at working memory, phonological processing and literacy attainment and takes about 2 hours. Assessment data, alongside information from parents and the student themselves, are used to build your child's literacy learning profile. This highlights strengths and areas of need which can help explain why they are finding reading, writing and/or spelling difficult.

Why would I book a Literacy Learning Needs Assessment?

A Literacy Learning Needs Assessment can provide you with detailed information to help understand why your child is finding reading, writing and/or spelling difficult. The report written will provide you with personalised recommendations for support at home and in school. It cannot be used to diagnose dyslexia but will give you an indication of any dyslexic-tendencies in your child’s learning profile.

You may choose to proceed with a Literacy Learning Needs Assessment if:

  • Your child is working below the expected standard for their age in reading, writing and/or spelling and you would like a better understanding of how to support them.

  • Your child has a private tutor and you would like a detailed picture of their learning needs to support them.

  • Your child has been identified as having mild or moderate dyslexic tendencies on a dyslexia screener.

  • Your child’s teacher has suggested they may have dyslexic-tendencies and you would like to explore this further.

Before booking a Literacy Learning Needs Assessment, I would advise you to talk to your child’s class teacher or school SENCo about your concerns and any support your child is receiving at school.

What happens if I choose to book a Literacy Learning Needs Assessment?

A Literacy Learning Needs Assessment costs £300. A date is confirmed once the contract has been returned and a deposit of £100 has been made. The assessment can take place at my house, your house or at Skills School in Cirencester and takes around 2 hours, including a snack break.

Brief verbal feedback will be given after the assessment and a written report made available within 15 working days. This will provide a clear overview of your child’s strengths and learning needs as well as personalised recommendations for supporting them.
